Dramatic
results for joint health and positive mood
S-Adenosyl-methionine
(SAMe) is formed by combining L-methionine with
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) – the body's
primary energy molecule for fueling the heart
and other major organs. It was discovered by
scientists in Italy in 1952, and after more than
40 years of use in Europe, SAMe remains the
safest, active and efficient methyl donor known.
SAMe is involved in a
complex series of biochemical pathways in the
human body. It functions as a methyl donor in
the transmethylation process and is also
involved in transsulfuration and
aminopropytation pathways.
As a methyl donor, SAMe
adds a single carbon unit to another molecule
– a process known as transmethylation. SAMe
transfers its S-methyl group to the brain and
nerve sheaths to protect the synthesis of
phospholipids and neurotransmitters. Experts
theorize that this methylation process increases
levels of mood-elevating neurotransmitters such
as serotonin and dopamine, and also increases
phosphatidylserine levels – which can have a
dramatic effect on mood.
By releasing its methyl
groups, SAMe also becomes part of another
complex pathway – the transsulfuration
process. As part of this process, SAMe becomes a
critical component for the synthesis of all
sulfur-containing compounds in the body,
including glutathione and taurine. Glutathione
is one of the body's most important endogenous
antioxidants, and both glutathione and taurine
are critical for the liver's detoxification
process. Some of the sulfur from this process is
also used to build connective tissue such as
cartilage, ligaments, and tendons, and help form
strong joints.
Aminopropytation (or
polyamine synthesis) also occurs with SAMe.
Aminopropytation produces substances known as
polyamines, which play an important role in cell
and tissue growth. A by-product of the
production of these polyamines is a natural
chemical known as methylthioadenosine (MTA) –
the body's 'communication mechanism' for
transferring pain and inflammation messages to
the brain. This process may also contribute to
SAMe's benefits for joint health.
Supplementing SAMe is
important because it is not easily obtained from
food, and the availability of this important
molecule decreases with age. Long-term clinical
trials in Europe have found that SAMe is safe
and suitable for long-term supplementation.
Because SAMe is a
highly reactive molecule, PhysioLogics has
subjected its product to rigorous quality
assurance testing methods. PhysioLogics' SAMe is
manufactured under strict climate controls and
blended, compressed, and enterically coated the
same day to minimize degradation. We further
test the enteric coating for disintegration
using current USP methods, run a post-tablet
concentration evaluation using HPLC technology,
and check for degradants and friability
(brittleness) in the tablets.
SAMe's benefits
include:
- Increasing levels of
mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the
brain
- An important
component of healthy joints and tissue
- Used in Europe for
over 40 years with very few side effects
- Enterically coated
and tested for stability at doses of
1200-1600 mg per day*

with bipolar disorder should not take this
product unless recommended by their health care
professional. If you are pregnant or lactating,
consult your health care professional before
using this product.
