Promote deep, restful sleep

Consistent restful sleep is crucial for restoring the mind and body – yet many people don't get the sleep they need.

Researchers now know that many of the human body's functions are governed by an internal clock that signals the secretion of various hormones at different times, known as the 'circadian rhythms.' Melatonin is the body's biological timekeeper, synchronizing the natural secretion of these hormones and regulating periods of sleep and wakefulness.

Melatonin is a naturally-occurring hormone produced deep within the center of the brain by the pea-sized pineal gland. The pineal gland responds to the amount of light passing through the retina of the eye to trigger its activity. A message is then relayed to the hypothalamus which registers the intensity of the light. For example, at night, when only small amounts of light filter through the retina, the hypothalamus transmits a signal back to the pineal gland, encouraging the production of melatonin. When melatonin is released, the body prepares for sound sleep.

Young children produce melatonin in abundance. Then, at puberty, melatonin levels begin a slow and steady decline. Researchers theorize that as we age, calcium accumulates in the pineal gland, and drastically decreases melatonin production. By the mid-40s, melatonin levels drop to about only half the levels of youth. Seventy or eighty-year-olds can have melatonin in amounts so small they are undetectable.

Thirty years of studies show that sleep patterns can be enhanced and restored by maintaining optimum melatonin levels in the body. Melatonin may reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. Melatonin can also help the body adjust to new time-zones. Research shows that melatonin can help the body reset its biological clock, which can be disrupted by long-distance travel or prolonged night shifts.

PhysioLogics' Melatonin offers many benefits:

  • Promote safe and restful sleep
  • Help the body naturally readjust its biological clock
  • Reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep*
