Herbal
nutrition for the body's natural defenses
Echinacea
is currently the number one selling herb in
America, and is widely regarded as the herb of
choice of nourishing the body's immune system.
Otherwise known as the purple coneflower,
echinacea is a native North American plant that
has a long folk tradition and was widely used by
the Central Plains Indians. This century, the
chemistry, pharmacology, and efficacy of
echinacea have been the subject of extensive
scientific study. In fact, Germans have been
using echinacea since the 1930s, and now the
German government endorses it.
Echinacea's active
constituents stimulate the activity of a variety
of immune cells: macrophages (phagocytosis),
natural killer cells and circulating monocytes,
eosinophils, and neutrophils. Additionally,
polysaccharide components of Echinacea, such as
inulin, increase both B-and T-cell activities.
By binding to the cell surface of T-cells, the
polysaccharides induce non-specific T-cell
activation. Studies have also shown that
Echinacea also inhibits the bacterial enzyme
hyaluronidase and helps maintain the integrity
of mucosal membranes.
Not all herbal
preparations are created equal. It is important
to select wisely. PhysioLogics' Echinacea is a
guaranteed potency herb, which means our
echinacea is standardized to contain 4% phenolic
compounds and 15% polysaccharides – the two
major constituents in echinacea.
