Note
Ginseng and Longan Combination is the premier
classical Spleen-Heart tonic of Chinese tonic
herbalism. This formula tonifies two of the three
treasures: it strengthens the Qi (both the Qi and
the Blood components); and calms the Shen,
allowing it to grow.
When both Heart Blood and Spleen Qi are deficient,
one should nourish the Heart and activate the
Spleen energy. The Heart is nourished by enriching
the Blood. When the vital energy (Qi) and the
Blood are enriched, the Heart and the Shen are
calm and the circulation of the vital energy (Qi)
in the Spleen is appropriate and healthy. The
Spleen should govern Blood, but when the Blood
does not return to the Spleen it circulates
improperly causing fatigue with poor appetite,
palpitations, insomnia, amnesia, poor memory,
irregular and/or painful menstruation.
Ginseng, White Atractylodes, Astragalus, Jujube,
and Licorice are all major Spleen Qi tonics and
facilitate the smooth circulation of vital energy.
They support the upright energy in the body
helping to keep the internal organs in place as
well as strengthening the body's immune function.
Zizyphus, Longan, Poria and Polygala nurture the
Heart and help to calm the Shen and are sedative.
Polygala removes phlegm obstructions and opens the
internal path between the Kidney and Heart.
Polygala and Ginseng both strengthen the will.
Dang Gui and Zizyphus tonify Heart Blood and thus
have a tranquilizing effect on the organism.
White Atractylodes, Dried Ginger and Poria assist
the digestive function by drying out excess
dampness in the Spleen. Dried ginger is warming to
the interior and improves nutrient absorption.
Saussurea regulates the vital energy and
facilitates the circulation of Qi in the Spleen.
Saussurea thus promotes the smooth flow of
digestive energy and prevents the invasion of
Liver energy into the Spleen and Stomach.
Saussurea, combined with Poria and White
Atractylodes, helps to warm and dry the colon
helping to alleviate diarrhea associated with
Spleen weakness caused by excess worry. Dang Gui
and Saussureae help to regulate the peristaltic
action of the Large Intestine with both herbs
having an analgesic effect on pain and gas. Dang
Gui and Zizyphus have a regulating effect on
uterine contractions.
Jujube and Licorice help to harmonize the herbs in
the formula.
